Galaxy Digital finished the first phase of converting its Helios bitcoin mine in Dickens County, Texas, into an AI data center that has been operating for CoreWeave since July 2026, delivering about 200 megawatts of power for 133 megawatts of the computing CoreWeave actually uses. The campus sits west of Afton in northern Dickens County, where work on a second, larger phase is now underway.

Argo Blockchain broke ground on the 160-acre site in July 2021, and Galaxy bought it from Argo in late 2022 for about $65 million after bitcoin mining began there in May 2022. CoreWeave has committed to 526 megawatts of computing power across three phases, all under 15-year leases, and Galaxy says the campus could eventually reach 3.6 gigawatts of power capacity across more than 2,200 acres, well beyond what is built today. "Helios is now generating revenue across its entire 133MW of IT load, and greenfield work on Phase II is already underway," Galaxy founder Mike Novogratz said.

For a county of fewer than 2,000 people, the money is large: under a ten-year agreement signed with commissioners on July 28, Galaxy is to pay Dickens County $18.5 million in lieu of taxes plus $2 million for housing. "As a result of the Galaxy/CoreWeave partnership, we should see tax breaks to property owners, improved housing availability, an increase of well-paying fulltime jobs," County Judge Kevin Brendle said. The Texas Spur reported the county also granted CoreWeave its own $19 million abatement in December, with $4 million more as seed money focused on housing, and Helios expects to hire more than 100 permanent workers.

New power for the site needs sign-off from the Texas grid operator ERCOT, which cleared another 830 megawatts for Helios in January 2026, served by AEP Texas.
