A Global AI data center on the Huron Campus in Endicott, in Broome County, New York, is getting its own power plant. Bloom Energy built a 9.36-megawatt natural gas fuel cell system next to a NYSEG substation on Clark Street, west of Hayes Avenue, to supply it. Chris Pelto, who oversees Huron Campus operations, said the site needs more power.

Construction began in a Huron Campus parking lot in February 2026, and by early April Keeley Construction had finished building it while NYSEG crews worked at the site. Bloom says its fuel cells convert fuel into energy without combustion, built to give data centers a reliable power source.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said he expects more on-site generation in the future because it would take NYSEG a few years to supply the extra power that companies hoping to locate in the county will need.

The Village of Endicott has moved to slow data centers down. In July 2026 Mayor Nick Burlingame said the village attorney was drafting a 12-month moratorium on AI data centers, citing water and energy use in a village with a long history of water contamination.

"We have a long history of pollution, and we just have to make sure that we are good stewards of our environment locally," Burlingame said.

What prompted it was a small data center in Building 46 on the Huron Campus that recently changed businesses without needing zoning, planning or village board approval, because code enforcement saw no change of use; it has existed for more than a decade. "But, if that little center came in so effortlessly, this is a trigger for the moratorium," Burlingame said.

New York's own one-year moratorium on large data centers took effect July 14, 2026. Burlingame said the village would still act because the state measure limits only large data centers and the village wants to limit all of them for now.

Much of Endicott is zoned industrial, which could make it a target for more data centers. The Endicott Village Board was set to vote on the moratorium on July 20, 2026, at its regular meeting; no result has been published. If it passed, Burlingame planned a committee of businesses and residents to study data centers and report back before the village decides whether to change its rules.
