Google Rumble Road (Macon) data center, Monroe County, Georgia

Google owns about 950 acres off Interstate 75 and Rumble Road in Monroe County, Georgia, between Forsyth and Macon, where it has said only that it plans to build a data center, with no confirmed timeline. "While we do not have a confirmed timeline for development for the site, we want to ensure we have the option to further grow, should our business demand it," a Google spokesperson told The Telegraph after the company paid about $42 million for the land in September 2025.

Monroe County commissioners have passed a moratorium on new data center permits, effective December 3, 2025 with no set end date, as they draft tighter rules for the industry. The county rezoned the land to C-1 commercial in November 2024 so it could be sold to a tech company for a data center; before Google bought it, developer David Aldridge had pitched the site as a $1.2 billion campus of up to 12 buildings.

In November 2025 Google asked the county to sign a nondisclosure agreement on the project; county attorney Ben Vaughn advised against it, and commissioners voted unanimously not to sign, to loud applause from a packed chamber. Joshua Pruitt, whose family has 10 acres on Rumble Road, said the earlier rezoning vote had caused an "erosion of public trust." "If Google wanted to go into this non-disclosure agreement, why did they not send their representative," Forsyth homeowner Carol Edge asked.

Monroe County has turned down a data center before: in August 2025 commissioners unanimously denied rezoning more than 900 acres near Bolingbroke after hundreds of residents objected, and the owners sued the county. A proposed amendment to the county's development rules, drafted for an April 2026 commission meeting, would limit data centers to the M-1 district by special use, require 900-acre minimum sites, 500-foot building setbacks, public water and sewer instead of private wells, and a 65-decibel limit at the property line.

The amendment was drafted for the county commission's April 2026 meeting; no result of that vote has been published.
