State Data Center, Olympia, Washington

The State Data Center sits inside 1500 Jefferson, a six-story, 240,594-square-foot building on the State Capitol Campus in Olympia, Thurston County, Washington. The state agency WaTech runs it as the primary site for state agencies' servers, backed by a second site in eastern Washington, built to Tier 3 standards with redundant power, cooling and network links. The building opened in July 2011, the first major construction on the Capitol Campus in two decades.

The state financed the building with tax-exempt bonds through a private development team, and the National Development Council owns it on the state's behalf. About 950 people work there, according to WaTech's chief financial officer, Judy Fitzgerald. WaTech has moved state agencies' computer systems into the building, its Quincy backup site or outside cloud services, and some agencies have needed waivers when moves ran late.

Washington's Utilities and Transportation Commission is writing rules on how much of large data centers' power costs get passed to other customers, after a bill to regulate that died in this year's legislative session. "There will be indirect impacts on cost, and those are really hard to quantify," Commissioner Ann Rendahl said in August 2026.
