Metrobloks data centers: 3 sites mapped

Metrobloks won approval in April 2026 to build a data center on the site of a former drive-in theater in Indianapolis's Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. The city's Metropolitan Development Commission rezoned the roughly 14-acre parcel at 2505 North Sherman Drive, vacant since 1983, for a $500 million, 72 megawatt data center with closed-loop cooling. Residents stopped traffic in a protest days before the company filed its rezoning petition in October 2025, citing utility costs, pollution and few long-term benefits for the neighborhood. "Data centers are being pushed into Black legacy neighborhoods like Martindale Brightwood," the group Protect Martindale Brightwood wrote.

In Southfield, Michigan, the city council voted 5-2 in December 2025, after nearly six hours of public comment, to approve Metrobloks' site plan for a 109,683-square-foot, 100 megawatt data center on 12.19 acres on Inkster Road between 11 Mile Road and Interstate 696. Most residents who spoke opposed it. "Why do we have to be the first one?" asked resident Lysa Davis. Jeff Mandel, the Los Angeles company's chief investment officer, said the project could bring 35 permanent jobs and would have noise and tree buffers with closed-loop cooling.

In March 2026 Metrobloks announced a $1.4 billion, three-building campus of 568,800 square feet on 29 acres at 2515 Old Hughes Road in Liberty, Missouri, north of Kansas City, where it secured planning permission in December for the first two-story building. Metrobloks focuses on AI-ready data centers at the edge of metro areas; its chief executive, Ernest Popescu, previously worked in data center development at Iron Mountain.
