Akureyri has one data center, atNorth's ICE03, on a one-hectare plot granted by the town planning council with nearby land for expansion. It opened with 12 megawatts of power in two buildings and could grow to five buildings and 50 megawatts. The state power company Landsvirkjun has signed a new five-year contract to supply it with up to 12 megawatts from the second half of 2026, and in September 2026 atNorth was sold to the Canadian pension fund CPP Investments and Equinix in a $4 billion deal.
The site exists because of a quirk of the grid: limits on Iceland's transmission lines leave the north with more electricity than it can send south, Landsvirkjun says. "The location of the data center in Akureyri is very practical as energy demand in the South is already high," Landsvirkjun's Tinna Traustadóttir said. Mayor Ásthildur Sturludóttir welcomed the jobs and tied the project to new power lines in the northeast.
In November 2024 atNorth began expanding ICE03 alongside its site in Reykjanesbær, a joint investment of 41.2 billion krónur. The start-up Hringvarmi is using the data center's waste heat to grow microgreens with Rækta Microfarm. Data centers used just under 4 percent of Iceland's electricity in the first half of 2026, Landsvirkjun told Iceland Review.
