Reykjanesbær, the town around Keflavík International Airport, is the center of Iceland's data center industry, and both big operators here are growing. On May 22, 2026, the town's environment and planning council approved Verne Global's plan for a new data center at Ásbrú: one building on a 24,000-square-meter plot with outdoor backup generators, drawing up to 120 megawatts of power in three 40-megawatt phases between 2026 and 2028. Next come further planning work and site preparation. Verne says its Keflavík campus already has more than 140 megawatts.
atNorth runs ICE02 near the airport, which Landsvirkjun, the state power company, has called one of the largest data centers in Europe. In November 2024 atNorth began expanding ICE02 together with its Akureyri site, at a combined cost of 41.2 billion krónur, and chartered a special cargo ship and the country's largest crane to bring in equipment. In September 2026 atNorth was sold to the Canadian pension fund CPP Investments and Equinix in a $4 billion deal.
The local question is who gains from the power. Data centers used just under 4 percent of Iceland's electricity in the first half of 2026, Landsvirkjun told Iceland Review, and investment tied to data centers hit a record in the second quarter even as the economy shrank. "Iceland already sells itself by the megawatt," the magazine's York Underwood wrote. "Maybe it's time it came together and decided on the price."
