Delhi's data center news is mostly about the government's own buildings. In November 2024 the state-owned Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) began work on the Indian Coast Guard's first data center, at Mahipalpur in New Delhi, a Rs 588 crore (about $70 million) job done with Yotta Infrastructure and the software firm Attero. It was expected to take about two years, which puts completion around the end of 2026.
The Coast Guard project includes a disaster recovery center and a system linking the service's 109 offices and 88 ships, built to Tier III reliability standards. In December 2024 Sify Technologies opened an on-site data center built for the Supreme Court, launched with the Chief Justice of India present. Google opened its Delhi National Capital Region cloud region, its second in India, in August 2021.
Most big commercial data centers serving the capital sit across the border in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where Yotta runs a campus and Sify's Noida 02 building has 130 megawatts of power. Residents have little way to learn what any of these buildings use in power or water. Data centers are treated as "buildings or township development projects wherein there's no need for a public hearing," said Gutta Rohith, an advocate with the Human Rights Forum. Asked by the Internet Freedom Foundation, India's IT ministry said it had "zero information about data centres."
