Tamil Nadu's data centers are going up in Chennai, mostly at Siruseri on the IT corridor and at Ambattur. In 2026 ST Telemedia Global Data Centres opened the first 7.2 megawatts of a planned 45-megawatt campus at Siruseri, adding to 40 megawatts it already runs at Ambattur, and Techno Digital opened a 36-megawatt data center at SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri in February. AdaniConneX's Chennai 1, at the same park, opened in November 2022 with 17 megawatts and is planned to reach 33.
The worry is water, in a city that nearly ran dry in 2019 and had to bring supplies in by train. Not all data centers publish precise water-use figures, researcher Anusreeta Dutta wrote in Down To Earth in July 2026, arguing that permits should require disclosure of power and water use and weigh clusters of data centers together. Operators say Indian data centers mostly use air-cooled chillers. "The concerns are overstated," Yotta chief executive Sunil Gupta told Business Standard.
The state's 2021 data center policy offered cheaper power, stamp duty breaks and land subsidies to projects of more than Rs 500 crore that got at least 30% of their energy from renewables. It expired in April 2026, and the law firm Ahlawat & Associates noted that no extension had been announced. Dutta wrote that worries over resource use and few jobs had led the state to revisit parts of its incentives in favor of location-specific ones tied to renewable energy. STT has signed an agreement with the state proposing Rs 4,200 crore more.
