Data centers in Groningen: 3 projects mapped
Groningen has Google and QTS data centers running and more being built. Google opened its Eemshaven data center in 2018 and a second at Hoogebrug 3 in Winschoten, a €600 million project begun in December 2023, and it broke ground in April 2024 on a third site at the Westpoort industrial estate west of Hoogkerk, in the city of Groningen. QTS, which has owned the EEMSDC1 data center in Eemshaven and one at Zernike Park in Groningen city since 2019, is building a second, much larger building on the Kwelderweg.
QTS says it is investing €1.4 billion in the Eemshaven expansion through 2029 and will need about 130 people to run it. It says its data centers built since 2018 use no water for evaporative cooling, and the new building is prepared for a future district heating link. Google's Winschoten building uses air cooling to cut water use and has solar panels on the roof.
The national government has limited new very large data centers, over 10 hectares with a 70-megawatt grid connection, to two places, and one is the former municipality of Eemsmond, now part of Het Hogeland, which includes the Eemshaven port. The cabinet chose it because it lies at the edge of the country, has room and has enough green power, RTV Noord reported.
