Nordland has one of Europe's largest AI data centers under construction and more planned. In Narvik, the British company Nscale is building a campus for Microsoft and its customer OpenAI; its first phase will use about 230 megawatts of power, and contractors are already preparing a second, bigger phase. Nscale also runs a data center at Glomfjord, and the Hemnes municipal council approved the zoning for Nscale's planned 250-megawatt data center at Korgen on June 10, 2026; that decision can be appealed within three weeks of notice.
The Narvik project began as Stargate Norway, meant to be OpenAI's first European site, but in April 2026 Nscale dropped the Stargate name and Microsoft took OpenAI's place, TIME reported. About 350 workers were on site in March, with at least 1,500 expected. Narvik's municipal administrator, Lars Norman Andersen, supports the project and expects 200 jobs. "It's obviously beneficial that we utilize the green electricity here, instead of sending it to London or Stockholm," said site manager Torkjell Lund, who grew up in Narvik.
Not everyone agrees. Lars Haltbrekken, a left-wing member of parliament, warns that a wave of data centers could push up power prices and use up electricity Norway needs. In Mo i Rana, T1 Energy has been assigned 50 megawatts of grid power by Statnett to turn a former battery factory into a data center.
