Chon Buri, southeast of Bangkok, is where Thailand's biggest data centers are going. Google's subsidiary Quartz Computing won investment approval for a 32.8 billion baht data center in the province, expected to open in early 2027. DayOne is building its Chonburi Tech Park campus in the Amata City Chonburi industrial estate and says added land has raised that site to 300 megawatts of power, with a second plot planned to make it a 1-gigawatt campus.
The local fight is over water. In Khlong Tamru subdistrict, Bridge Data Centres is building QHI01, a 200-megawatt data center, with a 10-year deal for 3.3 million cubic meters of water a year, about what 36,900 residents use, reporters for the Environmental Reporting Collective calculated. Contractors laying the pipes said real demand would be a third higher. "There's been no survey asking the community about the data center or its water consumption," said Pudit Thamphayun, the subdistrict chief, who said he had seen no environmental impact assessment.
"The industrial areas always win," said Sarayuth Sonlaksa, a crab farmer. Sahassawat Kumkong, the People's Party MP for Chon Buri's Constituency 7, told Mongabay in July 2026 he wants a parliamentary committee to scrutinize data centers; at least 13 are planned or under construction in the province. On August 5, 2026 the Cabinet approved a national Data Centre Business Policy Committee, chaired by a deputy prime minister, to write unified rules.
