Data centers in Riverside County, California: 1 project mapped

Coachella has permanently banned data centers, and three more Coachella Valley cities have paused them. The Coachella City Council voted unanimously on August 26, 2026 to prohibit data centers, with an exemption for ordinary server rooms, and the ban took effect 30 days later. That ended Stronghold Power Systems' Coachella Valley Technology Campus, planned on farmland at Fillmore Street and Avenue 52. Palm Springs' 45-day pause, adopted the same night, runs out in mid-October unless the council extends it, and Indio's moratorium runs through October 16.

In February the council had unanimously approved a deal letting a Stronghold subsidiary build a new electric utility for eastern Coachella, with the data center as its anchor customer. Phase 1 was three data halls drawing 270 to 300 megawatts of power on 240 acres, and Phase 2 would add another 300 megawatts, while city documents put Coachella's projected 20-year electric load at just 70 megawatts. After a packed May town hall, on June 4 the council adopted a moratorium and canceled the agreement. "We are the policymakers fixing what we did wrong," Mayor Frank Figueroa said.

Indio adopted its moratorium in June, extended it on July 15 and told staff to draft a permanent ban. Desert Hot Springs has extended its pause for up to two years, and Perris is also moving toward a ban. Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta and unincorporated Riverside County have no such limits.
