Data centers in Logan County, Colorado: 1 project mapped

Granite Renewables, a New York company that develops sites for data centers with their own power, has been talking with Logan County officials about a campus that could need up to 2 gigawatts of power, about 2,000 megawatts, on some 4,000 acres. The Sterling Journal-Advocate placed the site 21 miles northwest of Sterling, near the Nebraska border. No application has been filed. Under county rules in force since February 17, 2026, it would need a special use permit and a public hearing before the county commissioners.

Andrew Fritzer, who chairs the Logan County Economic Development Corporation, told an October 2025 meeting the project could bring up to a thousand construction jobs, $15 billion of investment and 50 to 100 permanent jobs. That month the commissioners paused data centers, battery storage, solar and wind while they wrote rules; the development corporation's director, Trae Miller, worried the pause sent a negative message to the market. For scale, Colorado Springs Utilities needed a little more than 1 gigawatt at its summer peak in 2024.

The rules cover any data center of 1 megawatt or more. Applicants must notify property owners within a mile, map military installations within a mile, send their plans to wildlife and military agencies for review, and show their water source.
