Lowndes County has paused data center applications for 60 days, from August 25 to about October 24, 2026, while it writes rules for them. The fight is over 719 acres on Coleman Road in north Valdosta, next to the Foxborough neighborhood, owned by Pope Langdale, who has said he is talking with Atlanta developer DC Blox. No data center application has been filed for the land.
Commissioners rezoned the land to light manufacturing unanimously on July 8, 2025, after a 4-3 planning commission vote; the minutes describe "a large warehouse type campus." At a July 2026 information session, officials said no data center was planned and that Langdale's land allegedly would not be one, but a county presentation said DC Blox was in talks with a "private land owner." Lowndes Citizens Against Data Centers has held town halls, put up billboards and spoken at nearly every commission meeting. Tetiana Babcock, whose land adjoins the site, said loggers in March 2026 "cleared over the fence line, dragging the fence onto our property," breaking a 200-foot buffer condition. Retired Valdosta State geographer Michael Noll warns the site sits on limestone prone to sinkholes above the aquifer.
The draft ordinance discussed in July would require closed-loop cooling using water from outside the county's aquifer, send wastewater out of the county and bar variances. County Manager Paige Dukes said the draft will be made public before commissioners vote. Resident Joel Dion called the pause "a step in the right direction," but said most of the crowd "were hoping more for a full moratorium and a full ban."
