Data centers in Aroostook County, Maine: 1 project mapped
A small data center is planned at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, near the Canadian border. Loring LiquidCool Data Center, a company using cooling technology from LiquidCool Solutions of Rochester, Minnesota, signed a long-term lease in October 2025 for a 115,000-square-foot warehouse, building No. 7230 at Florida and Kansas roads, on land owned by the developer Green 4 Maine. It was to open in about six months, starting at 5 to 6 megawatts of power and growing to as much as 50; no opening has been announced.
The pitch is that it needs no water: the servers sit in a nonconductive oil-based fluid, so there are no fans or cooling towers. Power is the harder question. Northern Maine's separate grid peaks at about 150 megawatts, so a 50-megawatt center would use more than a third of it. "Adding 50 megawatts to such a small, isolated grid is huge," said University of Maine engineering professor Hepeng Li. Versant Power said grid upgrades would likely be needed at the developers' cost, and New Brunswick Power said it had no supply agreement with the project.

Planned diesel backup generators raised air-quality worries for the neighboring Mi'kmaq Nation and the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge. Green 4 Maine called the warehouse the first of several data centers on the base and said it is raising money for up to 2,000 homes there.
In April 2026 the legislature passed a ban on new data centers of 20 megawatts or more until November 2027; LiquidCool's vice chair, Herb Zien, said Loring "is able to move forward with the 20-megawatt limit." Gov. Janet Mills vetoed the bill on April 24, the override failed, and she set up a state advisory council instead, due to report by January 29, 2027.
