Data centers in Florida: 16 projects mapped
Florida's largest approved data center is in Fort Meade in Polk County, where city commissioners unanimously approved Stonebridge's AI data center on more than 1,300 acres. It cannot move forward until the city gets a new water permit, which the Southwest Florida Water Management District's board must approve at a public meeting. Commissioner Matthew Taylor, who says a recall petition against him is retaliation for backing the project, sued on September 8 to stop the recall; a judge has not yet ruled.
Two other Polk County plans are on hold. Cielo Digital Infrastructure's data center on Marion Road in Haines City, which would use 150,000 gallons of water a day, is stalled because the city has no spare water capacity. In Lakeland, Ryan Companies' Project Swan at 923 Wilkinson Road, which the developer said would draw about 100 megawatts of power at full build-out, led commissioners to vote 4-3 on August 3 for a one-year moratorium on data centers and other users of 50 megawatts or more.

In Palm Beach County, commissioners voted 5-1 on July 15 to reject Project Tango, PBA Holdings' 3.6-million-square-foot data center and warehouse campus at 20125 Southern Boulevard near Loxahatchee, about 900 to 1,200 feet from Saddle View Elementary School. PBA has appealed, which sends the case to a special magistrate, and a 2016 approval still lets it build a 206,000-square-foot data center there. The county stopped taking new data center applications July 9; a final vote on a yearlong moratorium was scheduled for September 24, and no result has been published.
Elsewhere, Deltona Corporation withdrew its plan for an 800-acre industrial park in Holder, in Citrus County, that could have included a data center, on June 23. DeSoto County's one-year moratorium, adopted July 28, does not cover DCIP Group's pending request to rezone more than 800 acres at a former power plant, so that project can still advance. Citrus, Clay, Hernando, Lake, Nassau, Pasco and Sarasota counties have one-year pauses, and Jackson and Walton counties have permanent bans. Escambia County banned large data centers in its unincorporated areas in August.
The state's new law, SB 484, took effect July 1 and lets local governments set stricter rules or refuse a project outright. Manatee County's moratorium is tentatively set for its second commission vote October 6, and Orange County, which contains Orlando, could take up its own in early December.
