Data centers in Cass County, Missouri: 1 project mapped

Data centers are not allowed in Peculiar, a Cass County town of about 3,000 south of Kansas City. In October 2024 the Board of Aldermen unanimously removed data centers from the city's light industrial zoning, blocking Diode Ventures' $1.5 billion Harper Road Technology Park. The plan was for up to seven buildings of about 300,000 square feet each on about 500 acres on the west side of Harper Road between 203rd and future 211th streets, next to a new Evergy substation.

Residents organized under the slogan "Don't Dump Data on Peculiar," put up yard signs reading "No Hyperscale Data Centers" and built a Facebook group of about 1,000 members, roughly a sixth of the area's population. Mayor Doug Stark, who had announced the project in January 2024, wrote that aldermen were under pressure from a "boisterous and ill-informed group" trying to "kill" it. Diode said there was no active application in Peculiar and has kept developing other campuses around Kansas City.
