Data centers in Jackson County, Missouri: 5 projects mapped

The biggest data center in Jackson County is Nebius's campus on nearly 400 acres near Missouri Highway 78 and Little Blue Parkway in eastern Independence. It broke ground in May and will need at least 800 megawatts of power, which a reopened Blue Valley power plant is to supply. Patmos is also planning a data center in a warehouse at 2500 Little Blue Parkway, with construction priced at about $107 million. Neither project is covered by the 180-day pause on new data center applications that Independence adopted on July 6.

The Independence City Council approved a 90% tax break for Nebius over 20 years, worth $6.26 billion, on a 5-2 vote in March. Residents tried to force a public vote on it, but a judge sided with the city. Voters then elected Kevin King mayor with 60% of the vote. On September 1 they recalled council member John Perkins, who had backed the tax break. "Who's going to want to live next to that?" asked Dawn Hahnfeld, who lives nearby.

In Kansas City, the Plan Commission voted 6-0 in August to deny Revitalization Unlimited's 384-foot data center on top of a historic building in the Quality Hill neighborhood. Jackson County has paused data center land use applications for 180 days from June 22 while it writes rules on safety and distance from homes. The county's pause ends December 19 unless it is extended.
