Staten Island has one data center, and no new one is proposed. Telehouse America, owned by the Japanese telecom company KDDI, runs a 162,000-square-foot building at 7 Teleport Drive in the Teleport office park, completed in 1989 and built as a disaster-recovery site for businesses.
The building's value is its connections. It sits yards from Telehouse's NYIIX internet exchange, where more than 250 networks swap traffic, and has underground fiber running to three Manhattan carrier hotels, to trans-Atlantic cable landings on Long Island and to a carrier hotel in Newark. Data Center Knowledge reported that space there rarely comes free, and made news when it did in 2009 and 2021.
New York's one-year pause on new data centers using 50 megawatts or more of power, ordered by Gov. Kathy Hochul on July 14, 2026, applies to new construction, not to an operating building like this one.
