Data centers in Westchester County, New York: 2 projects mapped

The data center question in Westchester County is about the closed Indian Point nuclear plant in Buchanan, which its owner, Holtec International, is taking apart. Holtec has asked the state grid operator, NYISO, to study a data center of about 200 megawatts there, but no proposal has been filed. "We're taking the steps to see what it would take there, but that's it," Holtec's Matt Johnson told the Indian Point Decommissioning Oversight Board on June 18, 2026.

Buchanan Mayor Theresa Knickerbocker said she would veto any data center proposed on the site because it is not zoned for one. "I'd like to have more information on what data centers are," she said. "I'm not reading positive things about them." After Holtec floated a small nuclear reactor to power a data center, County Executive Ken Jenkins introduced an act registering the county's strong opposition to reopening the plant. Under the 2021 closing agreement, Holtec may not propose new reactors unless the towns, villages, school district, county and state support it or do not oppose it.

The site will not be free soon. Holtec's schedule targets 2041 for even a partial release of the grounds, and a full release depends on removing spent nuclear fuel for which no federal storage exists. Montrose parent Jess Monet asked at a 2025 online rally why anyone would put "more nuclear on a site that holds 40-plus years of radioactive waste."
