Data centers in Suffolk County, New York: 1 project mapped

WF Industrial, also known as Wildflower, wants to turn a site with three vacant warehouses in Yaphank, in the Town of Brookhaven, into a $1 billion, 549,000-square-foot data center. The 71-acre site is near the Long Island Expressway's north service road, about 1,000 feet from homes. The plan is on hold: Brookhaven's 18-month moratorium on new data centers, passed unanimously on July 16, 2026, runs to January 2028, and the state's one-year pause on large data centers also applies.

The data center could draw up to 176.6 megawatts of power from the Long Island Power Authority grid, a load LIPA called manageable. Wildflower says its closed-loop cooling needs a one-time fill of about 700,000 gallons of water, "about an Olympic-sized swimming pool." Residents worry about the grid and the aquifer that supplies Long Island's drinking water. "My biggest thing is that it doesn't belong here," said Brookhaven resident Lynne Maher. "There's a robust review process that looks at environmental impacts of the projects, aside from a moratorium," said Michael Bowden, Wildflower's director of development.

The Brookhaven hearings ran nearly six hours. Supervisor Dan Panico turned down calls for a permanent ban, saying any ban would have to come out of the 18-month code-writing process. Next door, the Town of Islip approved its own 18-month moratorium on July 14, 2026; Supervisor Angie Carpenter voted against it, saying it "doesn't really comply with town code or New York State code."
