Data centers in Grand Forks County, North Dakota: 1 project mapped

No new data center is proposed in Grand Forks County, County Administrator Tom Ford said in September 2026. The county already has two cryptocurrency mining sites in the city of Grand Forks. Core Scientific runs a 100-megawatt bitcoin mine in two beige warehouses at 5601 11th Ave. S., on the city's western edge south of the DeMers Avenue Amtrak station. Sundog Mining, a local startup, runs a shipping container of mining rigs at a Minnkota Power substation in the industrial park.

Core Scientific opened its site in November 2021, filed for bankruptcy 13 months later when crypto prices fell, and came out of it in January 2024. The Grand Forks Herald reported in 2024 that the site was valued at more than $7 million and will pay more than $100,000 a year in property tax once a five-year exemption ends in 2027. The city also earns a franchise fee on electricity: about $390,000 from Nodak Electric Cooperative in 2020, before the miners came, and $772,000 in 2023.

City leaders want AI data centers next. "We really hope ... that we can become that hub for really smart AI data centers," City Administrator Todd Feland said, and the city says it is talking with Minnkota, Nodak and Xcel Energy so residents do not pay higher rates. The county is writing its own rules first. "We want to develop or create a development policy for data centers, just like we do for wind turbines, just like we do for solar panel farms," Ford said. Commissioners saw a model ordinance in June covering permits, buffers and wastewater; no vote on it has been scheduled.
