Core Scientific, a bitcoin miner, is converting its mining sites into AI data centers. In July 2026 it signed a 15-year lease deal with AMD for 529 megawatts of US AI capacity, which Core Scientific said could bring more than $14 billion in revenue, with AMD's deployments starting in 2027. Under certain conditions AMD can reserve another 1,925 megawatts through December 2028, which would take the partnership to about 2.5 gigawatts of power, and AMD received warrants to buy up to 30 million Core Scientific shares at $23.47 each.

The leased sites are in Pecos and Hunt County, Texas, and Muskogee, Oklahoma, where AMD leased 377 megawatts directly, and in Auburn, Alabama, and Dalton, Georgia, where an unnamed cloud provider leased another 152 megawatts under agreements AMD supports. The deals lift Core Scientific's leased customer capacity to roughly 1.1 gigawatts. Colocation, renting out space and power to other companies, made up 83 percent of its second-quarter revenue, while its own bitcoin mining revenue fell 66 percent.

The largest single conversion is at Pecos, Texas, where Core Scientific said in April 2026 it would turn a 300-megawatt bitcoin mining operation into an AI campus of about 1.5 gigawatts, with roughly a gigawatt available to lease and the first new data hall due in early 2027. It has secured an additional 300 megawatts from the local utility and plans to add on-site power generation it has not yet detailed. The company also plans to sell $3.3 billion in high-yield bonds to help pay for the shift.
