Core Scientific's Cottonwood campus outside Pecos, in Reeves County, Texas, was built in 2022 to mine Bitcoin and is being converted into a data center for artificial intelligence. In April 2026 the company announced plans to grow the campus to about 1.5 gigawatts of power; about 300 megawatts currently mine Bitcoin, and the site already has several buildings and its own electrical substation. Core Scientific has also contracted a further 300 megawatts of power from its utility and secured more than 200 acres for the expansion, with the rest to come from generators built on site rather than drawn from the grid, what the industry calls power generated "behind the meter."

"By expanding in a market where we already control power, infrastructure, and operations, we can execute with speed to meet market demand," said Adam Sullivan, the company's chief executive. Foundations for the first data hall are finished and precast concrete wall sections have begun arriving, with the first capacity expected online in early 2027.

In July 2026, Core Scientific signed 15-year leases with chipmaker AMD covering 529 megawatts of AI computing capacity across its US sites, a deal the company said could bring in more than $14 billion in revenue. AMD directly leased 377 megawatts of that capacity at Core Scientific's Pecos and Hunt County, Texas, sites and its Muskogee, Oklahoma, site, and can reserve up to 1,925 megawatts more through the end of 2028. CoreWeave remains the company's largest tenant overall, and Core Scientific was billing customers for 437 megawatts across all its sites as of mid-July 2026.

Microsoft is also building a much larger, roughly 2 gigawatt campus in Pecos, announced June 22, 2026, expected to employ more than 6,000 people at the peak of construction. "We are excited to welcome Microsoft to Pecos," said Reeves County Judge Leo Hung. "This investment reflects the strength of our region and its ability to support innovation at a global scale."
