Data centers in Reeves County, Texas: 4 projects mapped

Two of the largest data center campuses proposed in Texas are coming to Reeves County, around the West Texas town of Pecos, and each will bring its own gas plant. In June 2026 Microsoft announced a Pecos campus of about 2 gigawatts, to be built over five to seven years, with more than 6,000 construction jobs at peak. Chevron has signed a 20-year agreement to power it from a co-located natural gas plant, developed with the hedge fund Engine No. 1, that is to deliver first power in 2028 and grow to about 2.67 gigawatts. Chevron expects to make its final investment decision by the end of 2026; construction had not started when the deal was announced. Reeves County Judge Leo Hung welcomed the project, saying it "will create new opportunities for local businesses."

Water is the question any Permian town would ask, and so far the answers come from the companies. Microsoft says the campus will use closed-loop cooling that needs an initial charge of water and none after that, using non-potable water where it can. Chevron says the power plant will run on non-potable brackish groundwater and that it is working on reusing produced water from oil and gas wells; none of those volumes has been published. No resident, commissioner or water district has been quoted in published reporting on the project, and no county vote or public hearing has been reported yet.

A second campus is planned beside it: Prometheus Hyperscale and Istmo Energy intend 1.5 gigawatts of power at Pecos in a first phase and up to 2.5 gigawatts later, powered behind the meter by piped natural gas and ethane from a co-located Istmo Midstream plant, with first power through modular units slated for 2027. Also in the county, Core Scientific runs its Pecos (Cottonwood) bitcoin-mining data center, whose power use has not been reported. Next door in Pecos County, a separate county despite the similar name, commissioners approved a tax abatement on January 12, 2026 for a $5.5 billion AI data center project.
