Data centers in Ward County, Texas: 1 project mapped
Ward County's only data center is a bitcoin mine at Pyote, run by Genesis Digital Assets, a private miner with offices in the United Arab Emirates and the United States. The company announced a 300-megawatt industrial-scale mining center in West Texas in November 2021. In February 2025 it energized two more 20-megawatt buildings at Pyote, bringing the site to 195 megawatts, with room to expand to 370 megawatts. Under Texas's demand-response program, the company said it switches its machines off during peak electricity demand and is paid for doing so.
That mine is shifting toward AI. In June 2026, data center developer AiOnX, part of the Amsterdam-listed SWI Group, bought a 77 percent stake in Genesis Digital Assets for $500 million and said the company's 15 crypto sites in the US and Sweden, with 1.3 gigawatts of available power, would convert to AI and high-performance computing. AiOnX has not said how much of Pyote's power would move to AI servers, or when.

Pyote drew national attention for a different reason in fall 2025. On September 29, 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Customs and Border Protection raided a separate bitcoin mine in Pyote, the Lonestar Dream facility, and arrested 12 or 13 workers, many of them Chinese nationals with expired visas. Agents targeted a chip repair center on the site run by ADW Tech, affiliated with Bitmain; Data Center Dynamics reported that the Genesis Digital Assets mine was not targeted.
The same shift from crypto to AI is happening next door in Reeves County, where Core Scientific is repurposing its 300-megawatt bitcoin campus outside Pecos for AI hosting. In April 2026 it said it had secured another 300 megawatts, plans on-site power generation, and expects the site to reach 1.5 gigawatts eventually, with first AI capacity due in early 2027.
