Core Scientific Austin data center, Austin, Texas

Core Scientific's Austin data center, in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is a leased tier 3 building that formerly housed Hewlett Packard, which Core Scientific took on in 2024 to host GPU computing for CoreWeave. Under a multi-year contract announced in March 2024, Core Scientific agreed to supply up to 16 MW of data center capacity there to CoreWeave, with total potential revenue of more than $100 million.

It was Core Scientific's first move from bitcoin mining into hosting for high-performance computing. Chief executive Adam Sullivan said when the deal was announced: "Our new data center in Austin will support CoreWeave's near-term requirements while also expanding and diversifying Core Scientific's hosting customer portfolio across two categories of high value compute: bitcoin mining and specialized GPU cloud compute." In an October 2025 investor presentation Core Scientific listed Austin at about 20MW of billable power, with a customer in place.

Austin is one of the smaller sites in a company now leasing about 1.1 gigawatts of capacity to customers, according to CoinDesk, after a July 2026 deal with AMD for 529 megawatts at its sites in Pecos and Hunt County, Texas, and Muskogee, Oklahoma. Colocation made up 83 percent of Core Scientific's second-quarter 2026 revenue as its own bitcoin mining wound down.

Texas has frozen new data center grid connections for now. Gov. Greg Abbott ordered an audit on August 3, 2026 of about 250 to 300 projects in ERCOT's first batch of large-load connection requests, most of them data centers, which must be completed before any data center in that queue can connect to the state grid. ERCOT said the audit would take several months and that it still aimed to finish studying the first batch by April. The audit covers projects seeking new connections; Core Scientific lists the Austin building as already serving a customer.
