Data centers in Marion County, South Carolina: 1 project mapped

On January 22, 2026, as a rare winter storm bore down on South Carolina, the Marion County Council approved a fee-in-lieu-of-tax deal and other incentives for a data center that the agenda listed only as "Project Liberty." Council members had signed a non-disclosure agreement. "There was a public meeting, which most were unaware of," resident Jessie Chandler told Capital B. Samuel Burns asked the council to slow down: "I don't know what it's going to do to the county." Capital B described the project as a $2.4 billion campus; DCD reported it had first been pitched at $800 million, with three buildings of 655,770 square feet each and room for more.

The project was tied to a company called Eagle Myra LLC, and Stream Data Centers was later named as its developer. County officials said full build-out could bring about $28 million a year, more than the county's entire $25 million budget, and roughly 20 permanent jobs in a county of 30,000. They said the site would use closed-loop cooling, drawing about 7,175 gallons of water a day per building for up to six buildings; MarCo Rural Water put the first building's use at a "very small" 7,500 gallons a day. Dylan Coleman of the Winyah Rivers Alliance said that after researching closed-loop cooling, he believed the county's water would likely be protected. Residents still packed February meetings and pointed to groundwater declines and drought.

In June 2026, Stream withdrew, saying "utility power cannot be sourced on this site within the required timeframe." It said the money it had committed to the county would still go to after-school programs, libraries and other local causes. Residents welcomed the end of the project but not how it had been approved. "We saw a process that didn't include us to bring it here," one said.
