Data centers in Berkeley County, South Carolina: 2 projects mapped

Google has run South Carolina's first data center at the Mount Holly Commerce Park in Moncks Corner since 2007, and has expanded it into one of its five largest campuses worldwide. After a $600 million build-out around 2020, Google added $1.3 billion in September 2024 and another $9 billion in October 2025, spread across this campus and two new ones in neighboring Dorchester County. County Supervisor Johnny Cribb has backed every expansion, crediting Google's tax payments with funding 60 emergency medical technician positions while keeping county taxes the lowest in the state.

Water has been the recurring fight. Google may draw drinking water from the aquifer beneath the county only as a last resort, under a 2019 settlement with the Coastal Conservation League after it sought to triple its withdrawal limit to 1.5 million gallons a day. State regulators had authorized 549 million gallons a year even as other users were told to cut back to protect the aquifer. "The public voice is a game-changer," said Laura Cantral, the league's executive director. Google must now report its groundwater use every quarter instead of once a year, but state law still does not require data centers to disclose water use generally.

A second, smaller project is planned at the Camp Hall commerce park in Ridgeville: DC Blox bought 27.5 acres from the state utility Santee Cooper, which will also supply its power, for four buildings totaling about 200,000 square feet and 45 megawatts. No construction timeline has been announced. Unlike Chesterfield and Newberry counties, which adopted data center moratoriums in 2026, Berkeley County has not paused new projects.
