The land along FM 2897 southeast of Vernon, around Oklaunion, is where Wilbarger County's data center development is concentrated. Google said in February 2026 that it has a data center under construction in Wilbarger County, to be built alongside new power developed by AES. State licensing filings reported by Data Center Dynamics show two buildings, Project Rise 1A and 2A, each about 991,000 square feet and valued at $500 million, at FM 2897 South. They were filed by Planton Investments LLC and Platon Investments LLC, both giving Google's headquarters as their address, with work starting March 31, 2026 and due to finish by the end of March 2028. Google says the campus will be air-cooled and use water mainly for things like kitchens; it lists the site as "in development" with no opening date.

Water is the local concern. Vernon draws its supply from wells in the Seymour Aquifer, and the Vernon Daily Record describes drought and the data center projects as having made water an increasingly important issue in the county. On September 1 Google announced $4.5 million for Vernon to replace an aging water pipeline, the first grant from a $10 million Texas water program. The Vernon Daily Record noted that the money is separate from the data center and is not an agreement to supply it with water. "Without Google's support, this project would not have been possible," Mayor Pam Gosline said.

A second campus may follow. Through an affiliate, NPDC LLC, Seattle-based Sabey Data Centers now owns 1,245 acres along FM 2897, up from 645 acres a year earlier, and has marketed the site as a campus of up to 200 megawatts. The Record's reporting found test holes drilled for Sabey in August 2024, a 2024 facilities agreement for a "Riley Sabey Interconnection" between Electric Transmission Texas and AEP Texas, and high-voltage current transformers labeled for "AEP 345KV RILEY STATION-SABEY" arriving in Houston in August 2026. Sabey's investment partner still lists the project as pre-development, no customer has been named, and no building construction is on record.

Bitcoin mining got there first. Genesis Digital Assets, a privately held miner with offices in the UAE and the US, runs a mining site at Vernon that it expanded to 70 megawatts in early 2025 with a 10-megawatt container deployment. It takes part in the Texas grid's demand-response program, shutting down during peaks in exchange for payment.
