Data centers in Mason County, West Virginia: 1 project mapped
A data center project north of Point Pleasant has changed hands and shape twice since the state approved up to $62.5 million in forgivable loans for Fidelis New Energy's Mountaineer GigaSystem in 2023. In March 2026 the AI infrastructure company Nscale bought the site, now called the Monarch Compute Campus, and said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Microsoft for 1.35 gigawatts of AI computing there. State and company officials say the site could eventually reach nearly 8 gigawatts of power at full build-out. Nscale has not given the Microsoft agreement to HD Media.
The hydrogen plan is gone. In May 2026 a Fidelis affiliate surrendered its air permit, telling regulators the project "has shifted from hydrogen production" to "the immediate establishment of advanced computing data centers." Monarch Cloud Campus LLC is now seeking a permit for a 2.16-gigawatt gas-fired microgrid of 864 engines to power three data centers off W.Va. 62, starting around January 1, 2027, with estimated annual emissions of up to 1,043 tons of carbon monoxide. The state honored the first $25 million of its loan and accepted a waiver of the second $37.5 million.

About 60 people met in Point Pleasant in March 2026 to weigh fighting the project. Mike Wooten, who lives near the site, said he was "not totally against it" but wanted protection: "Let's not circumvent or cut things off so we can bring these plants in." Morgan King of West Virginia Citizen Action Group said the plant would need 5 million gallons of water a day, the same as Charleston: "There has been an absurd lack of transparency throughout this process at both the governmental and corporate levels." Under the state's 2025 data center law, the county cannot enforce local zoning against a certified project.
The air dispersion modeling for the gas microgrid had not been filed with the permit application, and the water source has not been disclosed. The Department of Environmental Protection's decision on that permit is the next step; in May 2026 its inspectors had already documented dust clouds at the construction site.
