Cheyenne has hosted Microsoft data centers for about a decade and has become a magnet for them; Cheyenne LEADS counts 10 existing sites, five under construction and nine in advanced talks. The biggest is 8 miles south of the city in the Switchgrass Industrial Park, where county commissioners approved a 1.8-gigawatt campus designed to scale to 10 gigawatts on January 6, 2026.

Crusoe, the original developer, was asked to leave by the client; a June 30 filing revealed the client as Google, through subsidiary Jupiter Star Holdings, which now calls the project Tembo, a 716-acre campus of four data halls due by 2031. Black Hills Energy has put more than $200 million into serving the site, with power expected in early 2028.

The nearest home is a tenth of a mile away; the Hyndman Homesites neighbors asked the county to address well water, traffic, noise, light, turbine emissions and wastewater ponds, writing, "We accept the inevitability of the project and want to identify and mitigate concerns before they become problems." Project Jade plans closed-loop cooling drawing on the deep Lance Formation aquifer rather than city water, and Mayor Patrick Collins has told state lawmakers Cheyenne expects data centers to pay for all their own electric service.
