Apple Maiden data center, Maiden, North Carolina

Apple is adding another 237,600-square-foot data center building at its campus off Startown Road in Maiden, Catawba County, North Carolina, a $175 million project reported in April 2025 on land the company already owns. The campus, which Apple began building in 2009, spans about a million square feet and has drawn around $4 billion in investment, Data Center Dynamics reported. In 2015, a chemical leak at the campus sent five people to the hospital.

The campus runs entirely on renewable energy, Data Center Dynamics reported, from Bloom Energy biogas fuel cells, two solar arrays and direct clean-energy purchases. Apple's 2024 environment report put the site's use at 453 million kilowatt-hours, 82 percent of it from solar and 12 percent from wind. The Maiden expansion is part of the $500 billion U.S. investment Apple announced in February 2025, which also grows data centers in Iowa, Oregon, Arizona and Nevada.

With a drought raising concerns about local water supplies, Catawba County says the Maiden site draws water from the City of Hickory, along with other data centers in the county, and is projected to use a small share of the city's daily production capacity once fully running.

Apple opened its first North American data center campus in Maiden more than a decade ago, Catawba County says. The company has since begun shipping American-made servers from a new factory in Houston, some of which will be installed at Maiden as part of the current expansion.
