Ascent Data data center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Ascent Data, a Pittsburgh IT company, runs an operating data center at 90 Beta Drive in RIDC Park, just outside Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, as part of its managed IT and cybersecurity business. The company says its data center holds SOC 2 Type 2 certification, audited by the Pittsburgh accounting firm Schneider Downs, runs on seven bandwidth providers, and promises 100% uptime with staff on site around the clock.

The bigger data center fight in the county is over a much larger project a few miles away in Springdale, where Allegheny DC Property Company plans a data center on the site of a former power plant; borough council approved a permit for it in December 2025. Allegheny County is writing a model zoning ordinance defining data centers for its 130 municipalities, but county sustainability director Brittany Prischak said it will not be legally enforceable, since zoning for new data centers is set by each municipality.

On August 25, 2026, members of Allegheny County Council introduced a bill to ban data center construction on the roughly 30,000 acres of county-owned property, and it went to the council's sustainability committee.
