Bitdeer Crypto Mine data center, Massillon, Ohio

Bitdeer's bitcoin mine at 1115 Industrial Avenue SW in Massillon, Stark County, Ohio, is a crypto mining facility that works much like a data center; the first mining machines went to work in November 2025. By June 2026 the site was about half built, using up to 221 megawatts, which site manager Jon Wonsettler compared to a steel mill's electric usage; all 24 mining buildings were due to finish by the end of summer 2026, and no completion has been announced since.

Bitdeer bought the 31-acre site in 2023 for $1.6 million, land once owned by Republic Steel that borders homes in Perry Township, and received no property tax break to build the nearly $100 million facility. When Bitdeer asked City Council in March 2024 to replat part of the property, some neighbors and council members objected to the location: "I don't feel this is the proper site," said Councilwoman Julie Harwig-Smith. The council voted 8-1 on April 1, 2024, to approve the replat.

Noise was the main worry; after residents raised it, Bitdeer built a sound wall of 30 to 40 feet by the nearest homes and pledged to keep noise at 60 decibels or less at the property line. "That's kind of our main concern, in terms of being good neighbors," Wonsettler said. About 40 people worked on site in June 2026, with up to 70 expected at full operation, at starting wages of $22 an hour.

A fire on November 11, 2025, damaged two of the 24 buildings under construction before any servers were installed; investigators found no signs of arson, and Bitdeer's chief executive said the fire was caused by welding. Massillon is Bitdeer's only Ohio site now running; the company is also developing sites in Niles and Clarington and has proposed a much larger campus in Shalersville Township, Portage County.
