Bitdeer data centers: 3 sites mapped

Bitdeer, a Singapore-based bitcoin miner listed on Nasdaq, is pushing into AI data centers, and in Ohio that has brought it into the same fights as the rest of the industry. On June 16, 2026 about 200 people packed Shalersville Town Hall in Portage County, with dozens more outside, for a three-and-a-half-hour meeting on Bitdeer's plan for a 15-building campus of up to 750 megawatts on about 257 acres at the Turnpike Commerce Center. Residents pressed the company on electricity, water, noise, fire risk and the environment.

Its only working Ohio site is a crypto mine at 1115 Industrial Avenue SW in Massillon, planned for 24 mining buildings, of which eight were finished when the company showed the Canton Repository around in May 2026. The site uses up to 221 megawatts, which a company representative compared to a steel mill's electricity use. Bitdeer put up a 30 to 40-foot sound wall next to the nearest homes and has pledged to keep noise at 60 decibels or less at the property line. Site manager Jon Wonsettler said all 24 buildings should be complete by the end of summer.

Bitdeer's other large project is in Texas, where it says it has access to 563 megawatts of interconnected grid capacity shared by its existing Rockdale bitcoin mine and 200 acres of adjoining land it bought in September 2026 for AI and high-performance computing, with room to grow to 742 megawatts. It also said in August 2026 that it had signed a 16-year lease with Volta for an AI data center at its Tydal campus in Norway, worth about $4.7 billion over the base term, with 42.7 megawatts due in the second half of 2027. In Portage County, nothing has been approved: Shalersville Township has a moratorium on data center development until early November while it writes rules on noise, lighting, building size, utilities and fire suppression.
