CyrusOne Broadlands (Ashburn) data center, Ashburn, Virginia

CyrusOne is building a five-building data center campus on 57.6 acres at the Belmont Ridge Road and Dulles Greenway interchange in Broadlands, Ashburn, Loudoun County, Virginia. The company bought the land for $47 million in December 2022 and said at the time it would develop it "consistent with the existing zoning." In September 2026 residents launched a petition asking the county to stop the project, which they say has not yet moved forward.

The land had long been fought over: a 165-bed hospital planned two decades ago was never built, and a later plan for more than 700 homes drew objections over traffic and schools. Because a data center was already approved and permitted under the existing zoning, CyrusOne needed no rezoning or public hearing to proceed.

The petition, started by resident Dominika Cadotte, says CyrusOne "secured administrative, by-right approvals without any opportunity for public hearing" for a nearly 1-million-square-foot industrial data center near homes and schools. It warns of high-voltage power lines and constant mechanical noise, and urges residents to write to Broad Run District Supervisor Sylvia Glass and Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

On September 15, 2026, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted 7-1-1 to have staff draft a resolution pausing new data center applications for 12 months; the county attorney said an indefinite moratorium would not be legal. The board is expected to take a final vote on the resolution in October 2026.
