GotSpace Data Center, Bozrah, Connecticut

GotSpace Data Partners, a Groton, Connecticut company, planned a data center in Bozrah, in New London County, Connecticut, as one of five it hoped to build across the state, but in October 2021 Bozrah turned down the company's request for a new zoning category that would have allowed it. The GotSpace owners and representatives did not attend the Bozrah planning and zoning commission meeting on the request, telling town officials the company was going through a change in leadership.

GotSpace had host agreements with Bozrah, Groton, Griswold and Wallingford, and also aimed to build in Norwich. The same year, Gov. Ned Lamont signed a data center tax exemption law offering sales, use and property tax exemptions for 20 or 30 years, depending on a project's size and location. Founded in Boston in January 2021, GotSpace lists real estate developers Thomas Quinn and Nicholas Fiorillo as partners and had not delivered any data centers. Quinn previously led Verde Group, which won site plan approval for a data center in Montville in 2019 but never broke ground.

Bozrah's refusal spread. Wallingford's town council looked into rescinding its own host agreement for a GotSpace campus of five buildings totaling nearly 1 million square feet, after the Bozrah vote. Wallingford Town Attorney Gerald Farrell said, "Gotspace has some internal issues going on within itself." The town's lawyer said there was no legal basis to rescind the agreement, which could only end if GotSpace failed to apply for a building permit within 36 months.

For a data center to come to Bozrah, the town's planning and zoning commission would first have to create a zoning category allowing one. CT Examiner reported in August 2022 that Bozrah, facing a budget squeeze, was weighing whether to approve the data center; the town has not announced a decision.
