The Minnesota Star Tribune stopped printing at 800 North First Street in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, in December 2025, moving the work to Iowa and affecting about 125 jobs, and a data center developer moved to buy the building. In July 2026, Legacy Investing, of Arlington, Virginia, agreed to purchase the 13-acre printing site in the North Loop, expecting 20 megawatts of capacity; the same company had already turned the nearby Sleep Number building into a 30 megawatt data center.
Adam Duininck, president and chief executive of the Minneapolis Downtown Council, welcomed it: "I think it's an exciting opportunity just to rethink how a data center development can help spur a different use." He said it could lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in additional valuation and tens of millions of dollars of property tax.
The neighborhood did not agree. Kaitlyn Cooper, who lives next to the site, said: "I think environmental concerns of course is like number one, also just like hearing other news reports of like, noise and things like that." Hundreds of city residents took part in the opposition at forums in August 2026, raising environmental effects and how few jobs the building would create. Minneapolis had already imposed a six month ban in May 2026 on data centers larger than 350,000 square feet.
Legacy Investing withdrew its land use application on September 11, 2026 without comment, and emails to the company bounced back. City spokesperson Jess Olstad said: "The city looks forward to working with other partners who may wish to look at the future of this site." The Star Tribune still owns the building, and vice president Chris Iles said the company "remains committed to maximizing the value of the Heritage Printing Facility for the benefit of our community and our journalism."
