Meta's data center in Kansas City, Missouri, opened in August 2025, a $1 billion investment in the state, inside the Golden Plains Technology Park in the city's Northland. The park sits at the southwest corner of Northwest 128th Street and U.S. Highway 169, spanning Platte and Clay counties on more than 760 acres, and Meta's local project company, Velvet Tech Services, has since bought the park from its developer, Diode Ventures.

Kansas City Council approved up to $8.2 billion in tax incentives in 2021 for the park's full planned buildout of up to 5.5 million square feet in 16 buildings; the data center that opened in 2025 is the first phase, a single 601,955-square-foot building, with the incentive package covering further construction only if Meta builds later phases. Meta says the site supports more than 100 jobs now that it is operating, and that construction peaked at about 1,500 trade workers.

The incentive deal runs through a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes program, or PILOT, in which the data center pays a set fee instead of standard property tax; PILOT money from Golden Plains and a second Diode project nearby, Rocky Branch Creek, will cover nearly a quarter of the $74 million cost of a new Northland Kansas City Career Center. The Smithville School District says Golden Plains revenue let it add 7.5% to its base staff salary schedule, according to Diode Ventures.

The Northland is becoming a data center cluster: Rocky Branch Creek, a nearby 500-acre site, was rezoned in 2022 and sold to a hyperscale data center client in 2023, and Meta says its next generation of AI-optimized data centers, the first set to open in 2026, will be built for its AI work.

The Kansas City Council, which approved the Golden Plains incentives, decides on any new data center incentives in the city.
