QTS Ashburn (Broderick Drive) data center, Sterling, Virginia

QTS's Ashburn 1 data center, known as ASH1 DC1, stands at 22271 Broderick Drive in Sterling, Loudoun County, Virginia, on a 28-acre campus the company says will hold two buildings. QTS lists more than 55 MW of critical power capacity in the Broderick Drive data center, and its site lists a second building, ASH1 DC2 at 22280 Randolph Drive, with more than 22.5 MW as coming online in the second quarter of 2026. The company markets the campus with liquid cooling available for high-demand workloads, and describes the buildings as LEED certified.

QTS runs several other campuses nearby, including Ashburn-Moran on Moran Road in Sterling and larger Ashburn 2 and Ashburn 3 campuses.

Loudoun County is home to 233 data centers, the largest concentration in the United States, and data center development has been an incredibly contentious issue there, NBC Washington reported. On September 15, 2026, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted 7-1-1 to have staff draft a resolution pausing new data center applications for 12 months, with Leesburg's Kristen Umstattd voting no and Catoctin's Caleb Kershner abstaining. The pause would apply only to new applications, and the county attorney said an indefinite moratorium would not be legal. Residents have complained about health problems from living close to data centers, while the construction industry argued it needs the jobs. Others object to the high-voltage transmission lines the power demand brings near homes, schools and backyards.

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors still has to take a final vote on the resolution, and it was to take the matter up again on October 13, 2026. The pause covers new applications only, not facilities already operating, such as the Broderick Drive building.
