University of Michigan Los Alamos Data Center, Ypsilanti, Michigan

The University of Michigan and Los Alamos National Laboratory plan a $1.2 billion computing center on Textile Road in Ypsilanti Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, on the south bank of the Huron River. The state is putting in $100 million and the university is financing $850 million, with construction and completion projected between 2028 and 2031. On August 11, 2026 the university affirmed it will build on the 144 acres it bought next to the river, over the objections of township officials who want the project moved.

Ypsilanti Township passed a moratorium on new data center approvals on April 22, 2026, one of two local moratoriums now in effect along with the City of Ypsilanti's. The township wants the project moved east to the American Center for Mobility, away from the river and the West Willow neighborhood. State representative Jimmie Wilson Jr introduced legislation December 11, 2025 to rescind the grant: "The University of Michigan has not been fully transparent with this project and has refused to collaborate with the Ypsilanti Township officials throughout this planning process."

Township attorney Doug Winters said after the announcement, "We're going to fight," and Supervisor Brenda Stumbo called it a "call to action." Township officials said they learned of the university's decision by text message moments before it was made public.

The university planned a community town hall in the township for September 9, 2026, to discuss the project. No report on what happened at that meeting has been published.
