WhiteFiber Data Centers, NC-2 and NC-3, Yadkinville, North Carolina

WhiteFiber plans to turn two former Unifi warehouse properties in Yadkinville, Yadkin County, North Carolina, into data center campuses called NC-2 and NC-3, under a $60 million deal announced in August 2026. The announcement came the same day county commissioners voted 5-0 for a two-year moratorium on data centers, but the moratorium covers only unincorporated parts of the county, and the Unifi properties sit inside the town. "The moratorium only addresses the unincorporated areas of the county, which fall underneath our zoning areas," County Manager Michael Silverman told WFDD.

The deal, made through WhiteFiber's subsidiary Enovum Data Centers, covers about 120 acres and 500,000 square feet of warehouse space at two locations, and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. It says it is in advanced discussions with prospective customers but has named none.

WhiteFiber says the sites would start with a combined 60 megawatts of power, 30 each, and could support up to about 200 megawatts of power over time, with first capacity targeted for the third quarter of 2027. WhiteFiber, founded in 2024 by the Bitcoin mining company Bit Digital, already runs a 40 megawatt campus, NC-1, in a former Unifi plant at Madison in Rockingham County, about 55 miles away, which went live in the summer of 2026; the Yadkinville sites would be modeled on it.

More than 20 people spoke at the county's moratorium hearing, most of them against data centers, citing heavy water use and its effect on farmers, the loss of farmland, property values, noise and the county's rural character. "My family has been farming since the 1800s," said Janet Robbins. "We need our farmers, and we don't need to use our land for data centers."

Dean Swaim argued for a shorter pause and for data centers to bring tax revenue: "For the longest time, Yadkin County has always gotten the crumbs from the counties around them." Jon Collins of Enovum said reusing warehouses means an abandoned facility does not become a drag on the community, and that "we're not taking Bobby Baker's tobacco field and making a data center out of it."

The decision on the Yadkinville sites sits with the town, whose board has said it will neither hold a hearing nor impose a moratorium. On August 27, 2026, the Yadkinville Board of Commissioners said in a position statement that it "will not initiate a separate public hearing concerning data centers at this time, nor will it impose a moratorium on data centers," because a proposal alone does not establish grounds for one and state law bars down-zoning a property without its owner's consent.

The Yadkin Ripple reported that because the Unifi land is already zoned industrial, there is no legal or zoning hurdle to using it for a data center. If the town does later propose a change to its own data center rules, it must hold a legislative hearing first, where residents could speak.
