Logan County, about 30 miles northeast of Springfield, has spent most of 2026 arguing over one proposal: Hut 8 Corp.'s Logan Prairie Data Center, a 500-megawatt, $5 billion campus on farmland in Laenna Township, a mile west of the village of Latham. The public first learned of it in December 2025 through a terse legal notice. "There's a huge lack of public information," Latham resident Franklin Rager told Illinois Times. Hut 8 says it would create about 200 permanent jobs and more than 1,500 construction jobs, in a county that lost hundreds of jobs when Lincoln College, Lincoln Christian University and the Ardagh glass plant closed.

The money is the most disputed part. Hut 8 projected $65 million a year in new property taxes, more than the $55 million all taxing bodies in the county now collect combined, based on a study it commissioned. Opponents, including Logan County Indivisible and Sustain Logan County Communities, noted that CyrusOne's similar-sized 634MW project in neighboring Sangamon County was estimated at $5 million to $6 million a year. The county's supervisor of assessments, Jennifer Bryant, said she didn't yet have enough information from Hut 8 to make her own estimate.

The county's attempts to slow things down kept unraveling. It passed a 60-day moratorium 9-2 in February, then a 12-month moratorium 6-4 in May, after about 100 people rallied against the project outside the Lincoln courthouse. A data center zoning ordinance failed 5-6 on June 18, and the state's attorney told the board that same night the 12-month moratorium was invalid because it had skipped required hearings. "This moratorium situation is the biggest punch to the gut," said Amanda Maxheimer of Sustain Logan County Communities. Board member Michael DeRoss, who had led the review, resigned, citing accusations of bribery and a death threat he reported to the sheriff.

Hut 8 has since filed new applications covering 720 acres and sought to have Latham, a village of 350, annex the site, which would put it outside county rules; village president Theodore Allen said in late July the annexation lacked the votes, and the county tabled Hut 8's applications over technical defects. The county's zoning committee has sent a new draft moratorium on data centers over 100 megawatts to the state's attorney for review.
