Data centers in Anne Arundel County, Maryland: 1 project mapped

Anne Arundel County has paused new data centers for 15 months. The County Council voted unanimously on September 21, 2026, to turn Nathan Volke's proposed ban, Bill 63-26, into a moratorium expiring in January 2028. Data centers already built or under development can keep going and may expand onto adjacent lots. A study group, with a chair and seven members named by the council and four named by the county executive, will recommend permanent rules, and council member Julie Hummer said the pause would lift early if it reports early.

The ban was softened largely because of Fort Meade, the state's largest employer, whose backers warned it would hurt defense contractors. Microsoft also asked for the exception: it has been building a campus at the Annapolis Junction Business Park since 2020, and its government affairs director, Kaitlin Monaghan, said a ban would be "devastating to the remaining phases of this project." Residents backed a pause over power and water. "What concerns me isn't only the data centers themselves, but everything that comes with them," said Brenda Cintron of Hanover.

The one site mapped here is Sandy Farms at 7665 Sandy Farm Road in Severn, a data center building developed by Oppidan for the investor Harrison Street starting in 2020. It is fully leased to a single user, and GI Partners bought it in early 2026.
