Kings Mountain has paused new data centers until late August 2027. The City Council adopted a 182-day moratorium on February 24, 2026, and on August 25 voted to extend it by a full year while it writes rules; another company was seeking approval for a data center when the pause began. The city is already home to T5 Data Centers' Kings Mountain campus.
The first vote was 5-2. Planning director Henry Earle told the council the city had "zero standards relating to data centers" beyond ordinary zoning, and the city's findings called the chance of a proposal "extremely high." Councilmember Annie Thombs, who moved the pause, said: "For the safety of all citizens, I'm not going to get caught up in money." Scott Neisler and Tyler Fletcher voted no; Fletcher worried the pause "may push a project away that may not return."

Water was the top complaint among residents protesting outside City Hall. "I don't think they need to build nothing until they take care of our power bills, our water, and our taxes," said George Hammett Jr. The draft standards cover lot sizes, setbacks, screening, lighting, noise and whether the city can supply electricity, gas, water and sewer.
T5's campus is not new: in 2013 T5 signed a tenant for half of a 150,000-square-foot building there in a $70 million deal, and the campus already held data centers for AT&T, Walt Disney Co. and Wipro.
