The Homer City Energy Campus would turn the site of a former coal-burning power plant in Homer City, about 50 miles east of Pittsburgh, into a 3,200-acre gas-fired campus generating its own power for data centers. Homer City Redevelopment plans about 4.4 gigawatts from natural gas turbines, with power to start in 2027 and an initial investment of about $10 billion. Amazon Web Services has confirmed it is discussing a data center there with Homer City Redevelopment, but says it has no definitive agreement.

Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection issued the plant's air quality permit in 157 days, well ahead of its own 285-day estimate, after more than 500 public comments. The Clean Air Council's executive director, Alex Bomstein, called the permit "illegal" and said "the speed with which DEP rushed this permit through, especially given the magnitude of the pollution and the number of people who are going to die because of it, is troubling." The developer says the new turbines will cut emissions by up to 65 percent compared with the old coal plant, which the council disputes given the scale of the new campus.

What happens next is delivery of the turbines and a tenant agreement. Neither has a public date yet.
