Data centers in Bosque County, Texas: 1 project mapped

In Bosque County the data center is already rising, about a mile downstream of the Lake Whitney dam on County Road 3610A off the Brazos River. CyrusOne, the KKR-owned operator, announced the campus in July 2025 next to Calpine's Thad Hill gas-fired power plant, which will supply it under a power agreement, and has filed state construction applications for five buildings, the largest of them, DFW10, a $750 million filing. Local press describe it as a $1.2 billion project; CyrusOne says the site could reach 400 megawatts, and state filings show an initial IT load of 144 megawatts.

The worry has been the lake. Since August 2025 nearly 6,000 people have signed a petition warning that Lake Whitney's level could drop because of the data center and a planned water reallocation. At a county town hall in Clifton in January, CyrusOne President John Hatem said the site would not draw water from the Brazos or the lake for cooling: its closed loop would be filled by truck about once every 15 years, and wastewater would be trucked out rather than discharged. The Brazos River Authority said a separate study of the lake's hydropower storage would not lower the lake and that "there are no agreements or discussions between the BRA and the owners of any data center for water supply."

The money is the other argument. In November 2024 the county commissioners gave CyrusOne a 10-year, 30 percent tax abatement, which company officials said is the smallest incentive they have received. County officials told the town hall the project would bring about $70 million to local taxing bodies over 30 years; Commissioner Ronny Liardon later put the county's gain at about $8 million a year. "They could have gone one mile east, to Hill County, and this would not be happening," Liardon said. Clifton Mayor Damaris Neelley acknowledged that not everyone endorsed the project and that the community would hold the company to its promises.
