Childress, a small Panhandle town, has two large data center campuses going up at the same time as its water supply is failing. IREN, a crypto miner turned AI cloud company, has a 750-megawatt campus on the south side of town. It is building 200 megawatts of AI capacity for Microsoft there, and delivered the first 50-megawatt building in August 2026. Crusoe and Lancium have announced a second campus, a 1-gigawatt AI site on 270 acres, with construction expected to start in the third quarter of 2026. A third, smaller project, Soluna Holdings' Project Fei near Childress, has grown to 240 megawatts since it was first proposed.

Childress has been under Stage 4 of its drought plan, an "emergency water shortage condition," and under a citywide boil water notice since September 8, 2026, after disinfectant levels in its supply, Greenbelt Lake, fell too low. Mayor Cary Preston and County Judge Kim Jones both declared local disasters on September 11. "We are having to buy bottled water. We can't use ice. We can't brush our teeth in the water," resident Jordan Farus said. IREN says its cooling does not consume water on an ongoing basis and has trucked in water from outside the Greenbelt system; Lancium asked Greenbelt for water and was refused. "We told them no because we don't have the water," Greenbelt general manager Bobbie Kidd said.

On August 18, 2026, Lancium offered Greenbelt water from three wells on its own property, plus a pipeline and treatment plant it would build and lease to Greenbelt free for two years. The Greenbelt board voted to move forward, but the deal still needs a formal vote and state approval.

The construction workforce has also driven up rents. In July 2026, tenants at the Madison Chase Apartments received notice their rent would double to $1,500-$2,000 a month, with some given 30 days to leave; more than 20 people protested. "When you're having 4 to 5,000 workers coming into our area, all at once, it seems like it is hard to prepare for it," Preston said, calling it a housing crisis even as sales taxes have risen sharply.
